The dark night surrounded the vast Hogwarts castle, shadows growing bigger. The halls were deserted, almost like the only living organism was a ghost itself. An eerie silence hung in the air as time ticked by. It almost seemed like the walls were whispering amongst themselves, revealing to each other the different things that they had heard. The whole ‘walls have ear’ quote seemed to come into play. It was true walls did have ears, one never knew when someone was hiding and listening. Many secrets were revealed with the simple mistake of not considering that even when thought to be alone no one was truly alone. Time was another factor that never left an individual alone.
Unlike all the rooms in the castle, at this particular moment in time, one room was inhabited by a living being. The room itself looked identical to that of the rest, dark, old and musky. A few layers of dust coated the furniture in the room. Just as old as the walls of the castle, so was the furniture. On the window sill, basked by moonlight was the only thing that distinguished this room from the others. Small grains of sand dripped in a miniature hour glass, looped through a silver chain. The hour glass was half empty and half full as it continued to flow.
Its silver frame rested lightly against the pale and bare chest of Travis Marks. The hour glass was nestled between a cotton black t-shirt. The rest of the outfit consisted of baggy black pants and a pair of worn out army boots, laced untied. One leg was dangling off the edge while the other was resting bent against the opposite wall. Between two pale fingers, a Muggles cigarette rested as the ashes fell to the floor. Occasionally the cigarette would be lifted towards Travis’ mouth as he took a drag from it. After a few seconds white smoke was blown out as Travis exhaled, his attention focused on the grounds. Watching. Waiting.
He did this often. A bit too often for most peoples liking. Everyday the same place, no one has yet discovered him. That is how he liked it. Alone and at peace. Travis never really cared for the whole crowd and social life deal. People these days were so obsessed with what was going on around them that they become so self-absorbed. Travis hated that, it was why he was in this room, sitting and staring out onto the grounds.

Natalie was up walking around, unable to sleep as usual. Today she had gotten tired of just sitting around the common room and reading and decided to try something a little out of the ordinary. Well perhaps not for some people, but for her. As students go she was honest, had perfect attendence and was an A student. Sometimes she got tired of that, very tired. And though she would rarely admit it, sometimes hated her life. She was wandering around in the dark now, fully exited about nothing. The last time she had been up like this had been last year when she had sneaked into the library to get a book from the restricted section. She had sucseded without being caught, and had read the book learning many things she never would have been able to without it. But books could not teach everything, as much as she hated it, it was true.
She looked around and saw two doorways. She thought for a second and picked one over the other. Really for no reason, she was just drawn to one in particular and had picked it. Once she walked in she had the feeling she wasn't alone. It sent shivers up her spine, and she quickly looked all over the room in search of someone else. Then her eyes found someone, a boy. He was sitting in a corner, and by the smell of the room was smoking. She froze for a second unaware of what to do. She knew many people would be out, but she didn't think she would run into any. "I'm sorry... um maybe I should go." By the looks of it, he had not been expecting company and probably didn't want any. Especially company of a to-smart Ravenclaw. Again, why did she have to bring up that standard? Now she hated it even more! That's it, she was going to bomb her next test... oh forget it! She knew that wouldn't happen.

The grounds were slightly illuminated by the half moon in the sky. It was interesting to be sitting up all night and watching the grounds. Sitting there watching let people see things most wouldn’t. Since no one saw you they would do anything thinking no one was looking. Travis got to see the most interesting things when he sat on this window sill. A few people had done interesting thing in the pitch. At that Travis had shook his head and thought about how some people resembled little bunnies.
Putting the cigarette to his lips and taking another puff, Travis didn’t bother looking at the person who had just entered the room. If they had something to say to him they would. If they just wanted a place to be then the room was theirs. Travis wouldn’t say anything unless a conversation was started. He didn’t bother trying to start any with people. They either didn’t want him to or they found him to weird to bother talking to him. He didn’t really care; people were too obsessed with themselves to notice anything.
As he continued to stare out the window, he blew out the smoke that he was holding and tapped the ashes off the cigarette. “There nothing to be sorry about and you are free to use the room,” he told her. By the tone of her voice he had figured that it was a girl. After telling her this, he didn’t move from his spot. If having him there while she was in the room bothered her then she could always leave.

Natalie smiled when she heard his answer and continued walking into the room. She saw the window he was looking at and then spotted another one on the other side of the room. Her smile grew and she went to the window. Once their she climbed onto the window seat and watched the moon rise. Her hand crept up to her moon necklace and stayed their longer then it had in a while. At home she always used to creap out of her room and sit on the roof looking at the moon rise and adventually set. People walking by not thinking anyone was watching, the animals going about their buisness without and humans interfiering, just the way they liked it. To her the world was a completly new place when you observed it. Taking part in it changed how you saw everything. Her mind drifted back to the boy sitting in the corner she turned a bit so she could see him. Pehaps he didn't want to talk, so she let him be, and turned back to the window their was enough out their to keep her entertained for a life time.

He continued to stare out the window as he waited for the girl to either leave of settle herself into the room. Usually if someone stumbled upon him, they gave him one look and left. He wasn’t like all those jock pretty boys. Some of his black hair fell over the right side of his face coving a bit of that eye. A few sections of his hair were red. Each month he would change the colour, till he had gone through mostly all colours before starting again. He was like that Muggles candy called skittles.
When the girl walked further into the room and sat on the window sill, he was slightly surprised but said nothing. Instead he brought the cigarette to his moist lips and inhaled. He could feel the nicotine filling his lungs and relaxing him. It wasn’t the same feeling he got when he did drugs, but it was second best when you didn’t feel like dealing with the after effects. Upon exhaling the smoke, Travis glanced over to where the girl had sat herself down and observed her. For one he knew he hadn’t seen her before, if he had then he didn’t remember. Second of all she looked good. Not like most of the preppy girls he saw everyday. He wondered about who she was and why she was up this late, and walking around this area of the castle.

Natalie continued looking at the window for a while untill she felt eyes on her. She turned around to see Travis looking at her. She smiled at him before turning back to the window. What else was she going to do? Shoot him a look or say something? Only a few seconds before she had been doing the same thing to him. Outside the window the moon shone brightly and everything else faded away. It lighted up the lake making it look more apealing then she could ever remember. She had never known why, but she had always been entranced by the moon. The light it gave off was so much more peaceful then the sun, and quiter. Like it was more comfortable. Since her parents were muggles she grew up with a muggle lifestyle. She had learned about the man who went to the moon, and became very jelous. If only she could do that. Travel to a place so far away, but to something she could see now. It would be like a dream came true. But now she was a witch and could do many things muggles could never dream of doing. So wanting to go to the moon had slowly faded away, but sometimes the want came back and she solved it like this. Observing, breaking rules, making her life more interesting. She pushed her hair behind her ear so she could see better and pulled her sweat shirt farther down on her arms. She loved her sweat shirt more then any piece of clothes she had. Most girls had a favorite skirt, or top, but not her. She felt at home in her sweatshirt and jeans, like what she was wearing tonight. She leaned against the window frame getting more comfortable.

When the girl looked at Travis he smirked and turned back towards the window. So far it was all the same. No one was out yet, but he knew someone would eventually come out. It would be interesting to watch someone getting up to something. The next morning he would be able to have something to talk about or hold against someone. If he needed to get a favour from someone then he would have something that he would hold against them. The moon seemed to be getting higher in the sky and it began to glow brighter. He preferred the moon and stars over the sun and heat. It was just something about the moon that just made the night more enchanting. Travis was reluctant to see that his cigarette had gone out. Opening the window slightly he threw the finished butt out the window. Stuffing a hand into his pocket he pulled out a pack of cigarettes and took another one. With the cigarette hanging from his mouth he looked over to the girl. “Want one?” he offered. He did not know if she was a smoker or not but offering one would not hurt anyone.

Natalie looked outside consentrating on the moon more then anything else but occasionly looking down to the grounds seeing if there was anyone up and about. Then she heard the boy's voice and looked up. He was holding another pack of cigarettes, he seemed to be offering her one. "Oh, no thanks." She turned back to the window forgetting all else again. She was horrible at starting conversations, this she had proved only last week when she and Seth were by the lake. And how had that turned out. Silently she shook her head, and focoused on the moon some more. And a smile appeared on her face. Another dream of hers had been to fly, maybe that was why she had taken up quiddich. As a muggle it was only a dream, but now that she was a witch she had the feeling anything was possible.

Travis shrugged when the girl declined his offer. Lighting the cigarette he took the first drag from it and sighed contently. He shoved the pack into his pocket along with the lighter before sitting back comfortable. This was his fourth today. He just seemed to be thinking about a lot which in turn caused him to crave for more. He had too much on his mind and soon he would run out of cigarettes again. He needed to stock up. He turned his attention to the girl still sitting on the window. He had tried to start a conversation but she just didn’t seem interested. It was going to be another awkward night sitting there trying not to stare. Sighing heavily, Travis exhaled the smoke and closed his eyes resting his head against the wall behind him. There was too many things going on right now, he needed to get high. Tomorrow he would have to get something from Seth. That reminded him that he needed to have a visit to Knockturn Alley.

Natalie turned away from the window and looked around the room once, having not done so when she first came in. It was not to big, but not to small and had things packed on one side of the wall. But there was so much dust and grime covering them that it took a while to decieve what the shapes were. Her eyes scanned the room, stopping again when she reached Travis. He was smoking, a new cigarette it seemed. She sighed and her eyes moved on spotting spiders and all kinds of un-named insects. She smiled slightly. This room was rather... cool. You could sit in complete silence and let the world talk to you, or you could probably get away with a small party in here. She went back to looking out the window, the lake and the moon in turn. Okay, now she was a bit bored. Perhaps she should start talking to the guy, or perhaps not. For now she just looekd out the window.

Travis sighed heavily finding himself out of thought and going to the point of boredom. He couldn't let that happen. Racking his brain for a moment he tried to think of something the he could do in order to entertain himself. Usually he would have a joint with him but today he was still out. He had written on his hand that he had to go into Knockturn alley to stock up. That he would to tomorrow if he lived through today. He also needs to buy himself a new lighter and a pack of cigarettes. This was going to kill him if he ran out. It seemed that he really needed to stock up again. His mind was set, in the morning he would go to stock up. Looking at his watch he jumped off the window sill and pried open the window to its fullest. A cold gust of wind hit him but it didn’t bother him too much, he had on his coat so it would keep him warm. Hoping back onto the window sill he stood up and grabbed the top ledge of the tower. Before he did anything, his attention turned to the girl. “Care to join me?” he offered, before starting to hoist himself up onto the roof of the tower.

Natalie looked down at her own hands and pulled out a pen from her pants pocket. She started drawing random disigns on both palms of her hands. She looked up at the sky ocassionly, trying to draw a moon sceen on her right hand. Thinking of nothing in particular. She had let all thoughts leave her, consentrating only on the pen in her hand. She looked up when she heard movement, completly forgetting there was someone else in the room. She followed the boy's movements. He had opened the window, stood there for a while, and now was coming back in. He opened his mouth to speak, and she quickly turned her brain back on. Just in time to hear him say. “Care to join me?” She nodded immedietly, glad she now had something to do. She had stopped asking questions and wondering a while ago. Now she just followed her heart, or when she didn't trust that, her fist instinct. She stood up and walked over to hm. Following him, she hoisined herself out of the room and onto the roof.

Travis climbed onto the roof and sat back looking down to see if the girl would join him or chicken out. He was a bit surprised when he say her hoisting herself up. He offered her his hand to help her up. Sitting on the roof had been a recent discovery. He came here when he wanted to sit outside but didn’t feel like going all the way to the lake. Besides from the roof he could see most of the grounds. So far no one but the girl know about this spot but seeing as he had no clue who she was she wouldn’t tell anyone. He came up here when there was just too much shit in his life that he couldn’t deal with it.

After a moments pause she took his hand and with his help got up the rest of the way. She sat down looking out over the grounds, her eyes fiesting on the best sight she could ever have imagened. Right now all she could think about was how the moon shone on the black lake, how even The Game Keepers Hut looked beautiful. The moonlight really did change everything. The forest had an erie glow that made it even more tempting then ever. A smile spread over her face once more and she leaned back. Now supporting herself with her elbows. She couldn't take her eyes away.

Travis leaned back against the roof and looked out onto the grounds. He liked coming up here but when he was warm enough. After his little night out it was harder for him to keep warm. He tended to grow cold quite quickly. He didn’t mind it though; it was just something he would have to adjust to, nothing to drastic. He looked out at the frozen lake; it was covered in layers of ice. He pondered if he should go skating on it. It was something he hadn’t done in a long time but he remembered how much he had liked it. His thoughts drifted to why he hadn’t take to skating again. It wasn’t hard, and he like going really fast on a slippery surface. “Quite a sight isn’t it?” he commented seeing how entranced she was by the whole site. This was his second and last attempt to try and engage her in a conversation. If she didn’t bother to go with it then he would just stay silent and think.
