Kira had been walking for a long time. A very long time. The soles on her shoes were worn so they were hardly thicker than paper and her feet ached with each step she took. She had a small pack slung over her back which was nearly empty, save a thin jacket, a few coins, and some scraps of paper. She readjusted the pack, settling the straps more comfortably across her left shoulder.
With a sigh, the girl pushed a strand of brown hair from unseeing eyes, tucking it behind her ear. There were others like her around here, others who used magic. All she had to do was find them.
And then what? her mind mocked. You're just going to waltz on in there and ask if you can join them for tea? Puh-leaze. You should know by now that you're not going to find acce....
Kira shook her head violently, disrupting the stream of thoughts mid-sentence, and continued walking. She would worry about what to do when she got there.
She continued along the path, one foot moving cautiously in front of the other as she felt her way along the ground. She had fallen twice already on this path alone and her hands were raw and bloody from catching herself. Her right toe caught on a rock and she stumbled, nearly falling again. She sighed in frustration, pausing for a moment to regain her balance, before continuing on.
After what seemed like hours, Kira staggered up the stairs, hands reaching out to grasp at the door. With a swift tug, she opened the door and stepped through, pushing it closed with a decisive click. She stood in what she presumed to be the entrance hall, breathing quickly as she listened intently for sounds of anyone else nearby.
